Why Did I Choose to Study Software Engineering?

I wanted to study Software Engineering for a number of reasons, but the main motivation was to put me on a new career path. I needed a change and thought this was the perfect way to learn a new skill that would open up countless possibilities.
For the past 10 years, I was working as the Director of Film Programming for a company that owned movie theaters. My job was basically to book films in our cinemas (fun, right?!). As COVID-19 hit and things starting shutting down, I began to wonder what longevity the theatrical movie business had left to it. I watched the industry shift to streaming platforms and my own company explore the possibility of a web-based TVOD platform.
I realized two things during that time. 1. I needed to be proactive about my career and devise a plan that actually prepared me for the future. 2. I wanted to have the necessary skills to create and develop a platform rather than sit on the sidelines. I wanted to BE the developer.
I started small and took a few introductory coding courses online which only piqued my interest more. It was exciting to learn something brand new and rewarding when I was able to finally get to the solution. The analytical side of my brain was fascinated by what was going on behind the surface, so I enrolled in Flatiron School!
This blog will not only showcase the projects I complete and skills I learn in school, but will also serve as an outlet to share my experience, frustrations and emotions throughout this journey. I really am excited (and quite nervous!) about making this big change in my life. The next chapter begins now!
